Alvarinho - perhaps Portugal's most sophisticated white grape - only reaches its peak in a small triangle between Monção, Melgaço and Arcos de Valdevez. It's an hour from the Villa, perfect for a day trip.

Estates to visit (book tastings 24h ahead):

**Quinta de Soalheiro** (Melgaço) - pioneer of single-variety Alvarinho. Guided tours with 4-wine tasting around €15. The valley view is what you'll remember.

**Quinta de Tormes** - Eça de Queiroz's summer home, now a rural hotel with wine tasting.

**Quintas de Melgaço** (cooperative) - great value, free tasting with purchase.

For lunch: **Bouça Nova** in Monção (Minho river fish, lamprey in season) or **A Capital** in Melgaço (traditional Minho cuisine).

On the way back, bring a bottle for the Villa fridge - we have proper glasses and guests can share.
