Santa Luzia at the end of the day

Santa Luzia basilica on the hilltop is Viana's most recognisable landmark. Inaugurated in 1959 in a neo-Byzantine style that feels imported from Eastern Europe - always there on the horizon. From the porch you see the Lima estuary meeting the Atlantic, the city below, mountains closing east. On a clear day, Galicia. Funicular up from the centre, or the stairway through the gardens. A small viewpoint just above the basilica is the best-kept secret.
